Count

Count

Count is one of those interesting words in which it's various meanings have nothing to do with each other.

 Let's being with the origin of the word. It's origins date back to 13th century France. The word with it's Latin root means to calculate or compute in other words to count such as in numbers. It is later that the other meanings came into play.



Count: To calculate or recognize one by one to determine the total number, add up: He counted his tickets and found he had ten.




Count: To list or name the numbers: Close your eyes and count to ten.




Count: To consider or regard: She counted herself lucky to have survived the crash. Count me in.




Count: In some European countries a nobleman equivalent in rank to an English earl.

Wax

The word wax has a few interesting meanings. it's one of those words you don't often think has many meanings. Generally you just think of it as the material used to make candles. Though as you read this article you will discover the other uses for this word.


Wax: a sticky yellowish moldable substance secreted by honeybees as the material of honeycomb; beeswax.



Wax: The is the action of waxing such as rubbing, smearing or polishing with wax. Waxing your car.



Wax: To make a phonograph recording. In the early days of recording it was a common slang phrase to use the term "wax" for records.



Wax: To defeat or beat with a stick.



Wax: Such as "the whole ball of wax." the entire or overall plan, concept, action, result, or the like.


Wax: To increase in space, intensity, quantity and power. Discord waxed at an alarming rate.



Wax: Wax was a group formed in the 1980's comprised of Andrew Gold (songwriter of the song "Thank You For Being A Friend") and Graham Gouldman (bassist/guitarist from the band 10cc). They had two hits "Right Between The Eyes (1986) and "Bridge To Your Heart" (1987).

Neat

The word "neat" is a really neat word. Okay so maybe that was a bit cliche... but I just couldn't help myself. 



Neat: Undiluted, without water or another mixer, straight, strait up. Used to describe spirits or an alcoholic beverage; "I'll take my scotch neat."




Neat: In a pleasingly orderly and clean condition, tidy.








Neat: A slang word for great, wonderful, fine. "What a neat car!"







Neat: Clever, dextrous or apt. "That's a neat idea."







Neat: The Old English definition is a domestic bovine animal such as an ox or a cow.

Moderate

Moderate is a great word and one that I use often. It is a verb, a noun and an adjective.



Moderate: (verb) To reduce the excessiveness of, make less violent, severe, intense or rigorous. To become less violent, severe or intense. To act as a moderator. To moderate the use of one's words.

Moderate: (noun) A person who is moderate in opinion or opposed to extreme views and actions.






Moderate: (adjective) Kept or keeping within reasonable or proper limits; not extreme, excessive or intense. A moderate price. 

Moderate: (adjective) Of medium quantity, extent or amount. A moderate income

Moderate: (adjective) Mediocre or fair. Moderate talent


Moderate: (adjective) Calm or mild as of the weather.

Temper

I generally have to temper my attitude in order to keep my temper in check.


Temper: A particular state of mind or feelings. Especially in respect to irritability, patience or outbursts of anger.




Temper: A substance added to something to modify it's properties or qualities. Such as in cooking you may add certain ingredients to temper to flavor.




Temper: To soften or tone down. To moderate or mitigate. To temper justice with mercy.



Temper: To moisten, mix or work up to proper consistency, as clay or mortar.

Melon

Melon is a word you'd think only has one meaning. but I heard the word this morning on "I Love Lucy" and decided to look it up and to my surprise there were several meanings to the word.

Melon: The most common use of the word melon refers to the fruit that many of us eat (some on a daily basis). My personal favorite is cantaloupe. There are many melons including honeydew, watermelon, casaba, musk melon and several other.


Melon: Is a color defined as medium crimson or deep pink.


Melon: The visible upper portion of the head of a whale or dolphin, includes the eyes, beak and blowhole.


Melon: A large extra dividend, usually in the form of a stock, distributed amongst stockholders. Any windfall of money to be distributed amongst it's participants.

Wound

Wound is one of those words with two different pronunciations as well as different meanings.



Wound: (The first meaning described here is pronounced as woond): an injury, usually involving division of tissue or rupture of the integument or mucous membrane, due to external violence or some mechanical agency rather than disease.

Wound: (This meaning is pronounced as wownd): Past tense or past participle of wind. Something which has been turned or twisted. As in she wound the clock or he wound the wire on the coil. They wound their way around the winding road.

Dodge

Dodge: to move aside or change position suddenly, as to avoid a blow or get behind something.

 In the film The Matrix, Keanu Reeves dodges a bullet.


Dodge:  an ingenious expedient or contrivance; shifty trick.
 This skateboarder gives us an example of a shifty trick.


Dodge:  In photography to lighten or darken (selected areas on a print) by manipulating the light from an enlarger.




Dodge: is a U.S. made automobile manufactured by the Chrysler group. Includes models such as Avenger, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Coronet, Neon, Ramcharger, Sierra and several others.
                     The Dodge Challenger is a model that was popular throughout the 1970's.

 Terminal: a station on the line of a public carrier, as in a city center or at an airport, where passengers embark or disembark and where freight is received or discharged. Bus station, train station.

Grace is a beautiful word with several meanings which are connected to one basic meaning.


Grace: Elegance or beauty of form, manner, motion or action: We watched her skate with effortless grace across the ice.


Grace: A pleasing or attractive quality or endowment: He possesses the manly graces.



Grace: A virtue coming from God. Favor or goodwill. Mercy, clemency, pardon or forgiveness: He was saved by an act of grace from the governor.



Grace: A short prayer at a meal asking a blessing or giving thanks.

Swamp

This word doesn't have as many meanings as other words featured on this blog. Though it is an interesting word. The word was first used in 1624 in Captain John Smith's "Generall Historie" in reference to the Virginia Rivers.

Swamp: a tract of wet, spongy land, often having a growth of certain types of trees and other vegetation, but unfit for cultivation.



Swamp: A situation or place fraught with difficulties and imponderables: a financial swamp.



Swamp: to overwhelm, especially to overwhelm with an excess of something: He swamped us with work.
