Island

We've all heard the famous quote: "No man is an island". This quote comes from a poem written by Jon Donne, who was a poet, satirist, lawyer, and priest. He did most of his writing in the late 1500's to early 1600's. The general meaning of the poem is that human beings do not thrive when isolated from others.

No man is an island, entire of itself
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
if a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls
it tolls for thee.

-- John Donne

  1. i heard a song once that had a verse in it, saying an island never cries. I am trying to remember it, my mom used to listen to it...

    your post made me think of that.

  2. That's the classic tune "I Am A Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel. It is one of my all-time favorite songs...

    I am a rock,
    I am an island.
    And a rock feels no pain;
    And an island never cries.

  3. Love Simon and Garfunkel. Love the John Donne poem, some really powerful imagery.

    I think it would be funny if you did a post about... nothing.
